Congratulations! to GM Dr. Richard Beckwith of Willoughby, Ohio who won the tournament, which was a down to the wire finish, read more about this. Dr. Beckwith may challenge the 11-Man Ballot World Champion for this title. GM Alex Moiseyev won the title in 2008 and has defended it the last three years. If this is his wish we should schedule a WTM later this year.
Congratulations! to Teal Stanley of Greensboro, North Carolina who was our 2nd Place 11-Man Ballot National Champion.
Congratulations! to Mike Ross of Burlington, North Carolina who won our Majors Division and now the 2012 11-Man Ballot Majors National Champion. When you win a divisional title you must move up to the next level for the next 3 years.
Prize funds are only paid out to those players completing the tournament, and those amounts not paid are applied to next years fund if the payout schedule is already figured. Withdrawn players are also not placed as a finished position.
GM stands for Grand Master, IM for International Master, and CM for Candidate Master, which are earned titles given to distinguish players by WCDF.
ACF Rating - January 2012, Ratings supplied by ICH Checkers www.icheckers.net Program written by Vadim Khavinson, and calculated by Joe Moore and Eric Strange.
"T" separates player's opponent from player's accumulated game points. Win is 2 points, Draw is 1, Bye is 3.
We voted to play two classes; a Masters Class of 9 rounds as outlined in the tournament announcement, and a Majors Class of 8 rounds at 2 hours per round, 4 rounds per day with Majors tournament ending Saturday evening.
Ken Shultz's wife Paralee become sick from a flue shot she took Thursday, so Ken withdrew Saturday morning to return home.
We had beautiful weather until Sunday, it started sleeting Sunday afternoon and later turn into snowing that evening.
We appreciate Tim Laverty as our official referee and scorekeeper.
An 11-Man Deck & System Poster Board was displayed at the tournament by Gayle Smith.
Tim submitted all recorded games to Alan Millhone who will turn them over to Jim Loy so he can review, correct, verify, and annotate them for publication.
We appreciate the donations and contributions which totaled $700.00. This and the $550 entry fees collected made $1,250.00 less expenses = 1,140.00 total cash prize.
Mrs. Frances McClintock baked a delicious white icing carrot cake, this was a big hit, and greatly appreciated.
Players had the opportunity to purchase a variety of checker books which Dr. Beckwith had on display, and Mike Ross had his honey for sale.
Locals like Garland Phillips from Greensboro, our District Mgr. Larry Michael and Judy came by to visit us, as well as several wives and family members to socialize, eat lunch, and enjoyed the tournament.
Several ACF memberships were renewed and 3 new ones joined.
All players received a memorial coffee mug and a nice deck of laminated 11-Man Ballot Cards. Incidentally, if you were unfortunate to get a mug with an up side down print please let me know and I will exchange it for a good mug. We didn't check the box, only a few off the top layer was inspected since they were individually cellophane wrapped. John Webster got one of these, and the only one brought to our attention so far.
Most players enjoyed a variety of good seafood served by Libby Hill, our tournament venue.
A delightful tournament & wonderful fellowship was had by all who attended!
